First graders continue to make excellent progress with the skills they learned last year. We continue to work on beat vs. rhythm, in-tune singing, identifying the musical form, improvisation, listening skills, and movement directions.
For months now, first graders have been working to identify the number of sounds they hear on each beat. They identified that there were either two short sounds or one long sound on a beat. Just a few weeks ago, they found out the 'real' notation and name for these rhythms....ta and ti-ti. They are now becoming pro's at writing, reading, identifying, and creating ta and ti-ti patterns. This week, first graders did a "Write the Room" activity. They walked around the room and as they found a flashcard, they would copy the rhythm into the correct box. Next week, they will get their papers back and partner with another classmate. They will take turns clapping a rhythm pattern and having their partner identify which patterned they clapped. It's a fun activity for students and provides me, as the teacher, an opportunity to assess their knowledge.
Ask your first grader to sing for you: "Apple Tree", "Bluebird", "Doggie Doggie" or "Charlie Over the Ocean." They'll need you to be the echo with "Charlie Over the Ocean." :)
