Kindergarten has had a busy year in music so far! The main goal of Kindergarten music is creating a joyful experience filled with lots and lots of singing and play. Students are still figuring out how to use their voices and match pitch. We do lots of singing activities and lots of chants. Students can identify comparatives, such as fast vs. slow, and loud vs. soft. We continue to work on high vs. low, which is tricky for the students to distinguish with the correct terminology. Kindergarteners continue to practice smooth and steady tapping with the music, which they will soon learn to identify as the beat of the music. Students even have opportunities to sing by themselves, in the form of a game. This takes the pressure off of the students and is fun for them.
Ask your student to sing/chant for you some of their favorite songs, such as "Engine No. 9", "Bee Bee Bumblebee", "Grizzly Bear", "Nanny Goat", and "Johnny Works With One Hammer." I encourage you to ask them to sing one of these songs fast or slow, and then loud or soft. If you really want to get crazy, have them combine two (i.e. sing fast AND loud). I'm sure they would LOVE to impress you! :)
