Third graders have had a great year so far! In December, thanks to the CIA (formerly PTO), the third graders were able to go to the Ohio Theater in downtown Columbus to see the Nutcracker Ballet. Starting weeks and weeks before our trip, we began to listen to the music from the Nutcracker and learn about the composer and story. The students loved the trip and it was a wonderful experience for them! I'm so thankful they were able to go!
Since our trip, third graders have continued to work on melodic and rhythmic concepts in music class. They reviewed half notes and will begin to listen for and identify faster rhythms in the music. Eventually we will call this tika-tika, which are four sixteenth notes barred together. Students are becoming comfortable with the music staff and singing from it and writing melodies. They continue to practice sol, mi, and la. We will begin listening for a note that is lower than all the others, which we will call "low". Once students are able to write, identify, and hear this note, they will learn it's "real" name which is "do" (prounouced like dough).
As part of our half note practice, we read a book called "Who Killed Cock Robin?" This is one of my all time favorite books!! This folk song was adapted into a book by Kevin O'Malley. The story line is about Cock Robin who is a jewel thief who hasn't been caught yet. It is believed that he was killed and on each page are clues to help us discover whodunnit. No spoilers here! You'll have to read the book to see for yourself what happens....or ask your third grader! :) The song is beautiful and haunting and has many half notes for the students to identify.
Ask your third grader to sing "King's Land", "We Are Dancing", "Pizza- Pizza Daddy-O", or "Phoebe."
