Fifth graders have continued to build their rhythmic and melodic foundations. Just last week, the students added a new rhythm into their "bank" of rhythms. They learned that ti-ta-ti (or sometimes called syncopa) is three sounds over two beats. They continue to practice writing, reading, composing, improvising, and identifying various rhythmic patterns in music. Ask your fifth grader about some songs from music class, including "Oboshinotentoten", "Black Snake", and "Who Stole My Chickens?"
Fifth grade also enjoys learning line dances. Line dances bring a community building aspect to the group. They have to listen to the musical cues, remember the counts and moves, learn terminology for dancing, all while having a blast! Ask your fifth grader to demonstrate these dance terms: dosido, peel the banana, right hand turn, left hand turn, swing your partner.
Beginning next week, 5th graders will begin a drumming unit. Thanks to the Field of Dreams grant and the Westfall Elementary CIA (formerly PTO) I was able to purchase 12 drums. The goblet shaped drums are African based drums called djembes and the cylinder shaped drums are tubanos. Check back here in the coming weeks for more information about these drums!
